International Women’s Day:
“A Room of One’s Own” Art Show
Friday, March 8
4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
In celebration of International Women’s Day, you are invited to join local artist and poet, Debangana Banerjee, in a celebration of the artistic talent of women in San Marcos. Expect visual arts, poetry, and live music. International Women’s Day was created to celebrate the historical, cultural, and political achievements of women. This is a day to remind us of gender equality and the empowerment of women. The topic “A Room of One’s Own” is inspired by Virginia Woolf’s famous essay.
Participatory Data Drawing
Monday, March 11
7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
A participatory data drawing workshop runs through the processes of conception, design and
construction with an element of play, experimentation, and collaboration. Workshop attendees will draw their stories (data) based on prompts via Wi-Fi interconnected iPads. The iPads will be projected on an open wall to show the cumulative process of the participants’ creations. This digital environment creates a space for participants to share and to visualize their stories collectively and simultaneously in real time.
Bystander Intervention Training
Saturday, March 16
10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Incidents of harassment and hate speech are on the rise. One of the most significant
indicators of whether or not a person will speak up when they see someone targeted is if they have decided in advance to respond. This practical, hands-on training covers six steps to defusing harassment and hate speech. It is designed to give bystanders the confidence to stand up in these situations with specific strategies for doing so as safely as possible. Presented by Jessica Soukup.
