At approximately 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, August 11, 2022, San Marcos Police responded to a major crash at the intersection of McCarty Lane and Hunter Road. The collision involved two vehicles, a white Kia and a silver Toyota Scion.
The preliminary investigation found the Kia was traveling inbound on Hunter Road. The Toyota Scion was traveling outbound and attempted a left turn onto McCarty Lane when the crash occurred. The driver and sole occupant of the Kia has been identified as 38-year-old Steven Pena of Prairie Lea, TX. The driver and sole occupant of the Toyota has been identified as 77-year-old Barbara Payne of San Marcos, TX.
First responders attempted CPR on Payne, but lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful. Hays County Justice of the Peace Maggie Moreno pronounced Payne deceased at the scene and next of kin have been notified.
The initial investigation indicates Peña was driving while intoxicated. He was transported to Ascension Seton Hays in Kyle for medical treatment, and criminal charges against Peña are pending.
This is the 11th fatal crash investigated by San Marcos Police in 2022.
