City of San Marcos to Encourage Tree Planting with Giveaways

The City of San Marcos is kicking off tree planting season with multiple tree giveaways that will be held throughout the community. Residents are encouraged to attend an upcoming event and pickup free trees to plant during the cooler months. There will be more than 20 different types of trees available, and residents are invited to choose which kind they’d like to take home.

The tree giveaway events are in honor of the state’s Arbor Day, which is observed on the first Friday in November and recognizes the impact trees have on the environment.

“Trees provide many environmental and social benefits,” said City of San Marcos Urban Forester Kelly Eby. “Trees prevent erosion, control stormwater, and keep cities cooler.”

By offering residents the chance to pick up free trees, the Parks and Recreation Department wants to encourage residents to be a part of the City’s beautification process of the City.

“Our goal is to enhance our natural environment by planting more native and adapted species in San Marcos and along the San Marcos River,” Eby said. “By offering the trees to our community for free, we hope to encourage residents to do their part by planting native or adapted trees at their own homes.”

Residents have a limit of two trees per household. The trees that will be available range in size from three to five-gallon containers. The tree giveaway locations are:

Saturday, November 4 – at City Park, 170 Charles Austin Dr.

Saturday, December 9 – at Hills of Hays

Saturday, January 20 – Sunset Acres

Saturday, February 24 – Blanco Gardens

The trees are first come first serve and exact locations will be announced closer to each giveaway date. For additional resources and information about volunteering opportunities, the types of trees available, and care instructions visit
