Rainwater Harvesting

Rainwater harvesting is the collection and storage of rainwater before it runs into streets and gutters.  Harvesting rain water has been used for centuries and remains a practical way to conserve valuable water resources.

Besides conservation, there are many other benefits to harvesting rain water:

  • It’s simple.  All you need is gutters and something to catch the water in.

  • Rainwater is free!  All you have to buy is the collection system.

  • Plants love it! Rainwater is low in dissolved minerals and almost ph neutral.

  • It’s an alternative water supply so it’s exempt from drought restrictions.

  • It’s a great way to reduce storm water runoff, thus reducing erosion and pollution of streams and rivers.

  • It can reduce summer load on water treatment and distribution systems.

Rain Barrel Rebate Program

To encourage rainwater harvesting, the City of San Marcos is offering a rebate of up to $50 for purchase of rain barrels.  In order to qualify for the rebate rain barrels must:

  • Be new finished barrels sold solely for the purpose of collecting rain water,

  • Be covered or screened to restrict access,

  • Have a uv-resistant coating or covering to restrict algae growth.

The program is open to single-family residential water customers.  Up to 2 barrels may be rebated per residence.

Here's how it works . . .

Step 1:  Purchase a new finished rain barrel sold soley for the purpose of collecting rain water. Barrels must be screened or covered to restrict accesibility, and must be ultraviolet-resistant to prevent algae growth.

Step 2: Return the completed application along with your receipt for the purchase of the rain barrel within 30 days of purchase date.

Step 3: The City of San Marcos may call to schedule an inspection to confirm installation.

Stef 4:  After inspection, you will receive your rebate check by mail.
