Want to Volunteer?
The San Marcos Animal Shelter relies on volunteers to help out with many of the programs that the shelter has, as well as helping with everyday duties at the shelter. To volunteer at the shelter you must be 18 years old or accompanied by an adult and attend a one hour Volunteer Orientation.
Volunteer duties include cleaning and feeding animals, grooming and exercising animals, clerical work in the office and working on special projects, and events.
Cleaning and feeding involves making sure the living conditions for the shelter animals are as comfortable as we can possibly make it for them. Proper nutrition is also essential to maintaining a healthy animal.
Volunteers are given thorough instructions on how to properly clean and feed our animals.
Basic animal care involves grooming and exercising. Cats and kittens need brushing and their nails clipped periodically. Dogs and puppies need bathing, and brushing as well as having their nail trimmed. All animals need daily exercise. We have cat toys and scratching posts available for the cats to play with. There is a large courtyard to walk our dogs. Office work requires answering the phone, data entry, filing, greeting visitors, etc.
Special projects and events include various programs in the schools, and other organizations, and annual events like our rabies clinic, the Mutt-Strutt, Pet Fest, Sights & Sounds, and TX State Volunteer Fair.
Volunteer orientation classes are held twice a month – Call 512-805-2650 for specific dates and times.
