City Returns to ‘Fire Department’ Name

As the City of San Marcos prepares to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the founding of fire protection services in 1884, the City Council has readopted the department’s original name: San Marcos Fire Department.

The City Council approved an ordinance Tuesday changing the name from “San Marcos Fire and Rescue” to “San Marcos Fire Department.”

The department had been renamed in 2004 to Fire and Rescue to reflect services that the department offers in addition to fire fighting.

The return to the historic name will help the department standardize the emblems, badges, apparatus, and documents used by the Fire Department, said Fire Chief Les Stephens.

The City of San Marcos will celebrate the 125th anniversary during grand opening festivities in the spring for the new Fire Station now finishing construction at River Ridge in San Marcos.
