Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Study Continues

The Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Study began in June to inspect, test, clean, and analyze 21.6 miles of the City’s oldest sanitary sewer lines. The goal of the Project is to identify system deficiencies which result in inflow and infiltration into the sanitary sewer system. Inflow and infiltration of rain water and ground water into the sanitary sewer system can burden the systems lift stations and wastewater treatment plant, as well as cause sanitary sewer overflows.  The project analysis will identify appropriate repair and rehabilitation methods to reduce the amount of inflow and infiltration into the sanitary sewer system.

The City Council has approved an aggressive 10-year plan to conduct sanitary sewer evaluation studies throughout the system and systematically repair deficiencies identified from the studies.  The City operates and maintains 275 miles of sewer lines ranging in size from 6 inches to 36 inches in diameter. This Project will be the first step in reducing inflow and infiltration into the system.

Below is a schedule of the study activities:

JUNE   Above Ground Physical Inspection - locate sanitary sewer manholes in the project area and update the City’s maps.

JUNE – MID-JULY Below Ground Physical Inspection - open manholes, examine the interior and inspect each sewer line entering and leaving the manhole.

MID-JULY – END OF AUGUST Smoke Testing - introduce harmless smoke into the sewer system using air blowers to detect  inflow and infiltration sources.  Notification of residences and businesses shall be made 24 hours prior to smoke testing.

LATE AUGUST   Dyed Water Flooding/Leak Quantification – only done in a few areas - identify interconnections, pinpoint inflow sources and quantify selected collection line, manhole, and service line leaks that were identified from the results of previous tasks.

LATE AUGUST   Flow Isolation – only done in a few areas - measure the flow in the sewer system during the night time to determine infiltration rates.

LATE SEPTEMBER   Cleaning and Televising - clean a portion of the sewer system in the project area and televise it with a camera to evaluate leaks and locate buried manholes.
