Water is a precious resource in San Marcos.  It provides tourism, recreation, habitat for endangered species, and drinking water for a rapidly growing population.  Preservation of this valuable natural resource is vital to thefuture of our City, and to all that live and work here.  To insure this resource will beavailable in the future, each of us must strive to use water as efficiently as possible and to become water-wise consumers. 

The City offers a variety of water conservation programs to help accomplish these goals.  Your participation in these programs will benefit all of us.

The City of San Marcos provides rebates to those customers who purchase and install qualifying water conserving items listed below.

School Education Program

The City of San Marcos is dedicated to increasing water awareness in local schools.  The goal is to reach all K-12 students through a variety of school education activities including:

  • classroom presentations and activities,
  • sponsorship of water education curricula,
  • annual participation in Groundwater Festival,
  • annual distribution of water conservation book covers, and
  • water conservation art contest.

Public Information Program

The City distributes water conservation information and provides water conservation activities at numerous public events including neighborhood fairs, TSU events, home & garden shows, and business/trade shows.  The City also conducts presentations for groups and organizations that would like to learn more about water conservation.

Residential Water Survey Program

The City offers FREE home water surveys to customers that would like to save water and money.  The survey includes:

  • evaluation of household leaks,
  • measurement of shower and faucet flow rates,
  • measurement of toilet flush volumes, and
  • assessment of other water uses within the home. 

Each home receives an individualized report detailing specific water conservation strategies and their expected savings.  The City also provides FREE low-flow faucet aerators and showerheads to replace existing high-volume fixtures.

Residential water surveys are scheduled on Mondays and Fridays, between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm.  Call 393-8310 today to schedule your home water survey, and find out how much you can save!

Commercial Water Audit Program

The City offers FREE water audits to commercial customers interested in saving water and money.  The audit includes an evaluation of:

  • plumbing fixtures,
  • coolers and icemakers,
  • laundry facilities, and
  • other indoor water uses.  

Each business will receive a customized report outlining specific water conservation options, estimated implementation costs, expected savings, and projected payback periods.  

Commercial water audits are strongly recommended for:

  • hotels and motels,
  • restaurants,
  • apartment complexes,
  • nursing homes,
  • schools, and
  • any other business that would like to lower their water bills.

Commercial water audits may be scheduled Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9 am and 3 pm.  In some cases, it may be necessary to schedule multiple days to complete the audit.  Call 393-8310 today to schedule your commercial audit, and find out how much your business can save!
