On a couple of hot, arid July weekdays, the San Marcos Fire Department participated in the Texas Firefighter Summer Games that were held in San Angelo, Texas. The team played 6 matches in two consecutive days with only two substitute players.
The San Marcos Firefighters Football Club placed second overall in the tournament and their silver medals were almost as bright as their proud smiles! This was the first time the team medaled in the tournament.
Some highlights of the tournament were when after losing the first two games they won three straight including a 10-2 win over Houston which sealed the silver medal for the San Marcos Football Club. Ross Garman was the team’s leading scorer while battling injuries and dehydration. Randy Diaz was great in goal making a number of spectacular saves to assist in the club’s first ever medal.
Everyone left the field with sore muscles and one is missing a toenail but good times were had by all. The next Texas Firefighter Summer Games will be held in Mansfield, Texas 2018.
