[ARCHIVED] City to Honor Local Women with Induction into Women's Hall of Fame

The City of San Marcos will honor outstanding local women with their induction into the San Marcos Women’s Hall of Fame Thursday, October 12. The public event will begin at 6 p.m. at Pauline Espinosa Community Hall, 170 Charles Austin Drive.  

Honorees were nominated by the public for meaningful contributions they’ve made to the San Marcos community through personal achievement and community service. They were selected for induction by a committee of former recipients.

This year’s honorees are:

Mittie Miller – Miller has called San Marcos home for nearly 60 years. She has served on countless boards and is dedicated and passionate about the preservation of Black culture. She is known for her volunteer work, including for numerous Dunbar Heritage Association events. 

Mary Peterson Earls – A native of San Marcos, Earls has dedicated her life’s work in service of others. She has served on boards for multiple organizations, including CASA of Central Texas, the City of San Marcos Human Services Advisory Board, and Nosotros la Gente.  

Bobbie Garza-Hernandez – A native of San Marcos, Hernandez has a passion for empowering members of the community. She has served as a volunteer for various groups, boards, and commissions, including Council for Indigenous and Tejano Community, the City of San Marcos Neighborhoods Commission, and the Hays County Women’s Political Caucus. 

Nancy Hanks Ellis – A resident of San Marcos for nearly 60 years, Ellis has been a CASA volunteer for 23 years and has served 51 children. She is a graduate of Southwest Texas State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Master of Health Administration. She served on the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District Board from 1972-1975.

The San Marcos Women’s Hall of Fame began in 1984 to honor women for their volunteerism and leadership in the community. Since then, over 140 women have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Criteria for selection include volunteerism in multiple areas of service, meeting the needs of the community, demonstration of initiative, influencing positive change, and going beyond the call of duty.
