The City of San Marcos will celebrate the completion of the Uhland Road Improvements project with a ribbon cutting Thursday, September 28 at 9 a.m. at 1303 Uhland Road, near the Hays County Sherriff’s Office. The public is invited to attend the event, which will include remarks from Mayor Hughson.
The Uhland Road Improvements project added drainage improvements along the County Road, Uhland Road, and a portion of River Road including fully reconstructing the roads to meet City standards. Enhancements to pedestrian and cyclist mobility were also addressed with the installation of a new 6-10 foot wide sidewalk along Uhland Road and the addition of a roundabout at the intersection of Uhland Road and River Road to help improve safety. The project included the installation of a stormwater device that will help separate trash and hydrocarbons to improve the water quality received by the Blanco River.
“The updates made by the project will bring the surrounding community a sense of safety and reliability during rain events,” said Director of Engineering & Capital Improvements Shaun Condor. “The improvements made will help mitigate road closures and potential flooding that previously occurred.”
The City of San Marcos received $33.7 million of Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to assist with recovery efforts in response to the historic flooding experienced in 2015. The Uhland Road Improvements project is the first of four infrastructure projects funded by CDBG-DR to be complete. Other projects under the same funding source include Blanco Gardens Drainage Improvements, Blanco Riverine Flood Mitigation Project, and Midtown Drainage Improvements. Each of these projects are under construction and expected to be complete in 2024.
“We are thankful to our federal partners for the essential funding that will help address drainage concerns and mitigate the risk of future flooding in some of the hardest hit areas of our community,” said Assistant City Manager Joe Pantalion.
